Which is better? Google Maps or Waze?
Have you ever been lost on your way to an important event while driving? Struggling to approach strangers for directions to your destination? A navigation app is all you need.
Meanwhile, wondering which navigation app is ideal for use on Malaysian roadways? It is hard to choose between the two apps because they are very similar. Overall, the two apps only serve one purpose: to get you to your destination in the shortest time while remaining safe.
The differences between Google Maps and Waze can be compared as follows:
1. Real-Time Traffic Data
Waze relies on the community and traffic users to provide useful information such as speed traps, roadblocks, traffic accidents, etc. Waze is good at suggesting alternate routes such as residential shortcuts, that allow you to get to your destination in the shortest time. Don’t worry, the alternate routes are all completely safe.
On the other hand, Google Maps is more data-driven, allowing you to see where there will be heavy traffic and obstacles ahead, and it will direct you with the same predetermined path regardless of how the situation changes. Google maps will suggest alternative routes too but not as efficient and aggressive as Waze does. Despite the fact that both navigation apps are almost similar, Waze wins when it comes to real-time traffic data.
Winner: Waze
2. Discovery
Google Maps is well-known for its discovery features. You can find businesses and tourist attractions with all relevant information including directions, phone numbers, operation hours, reviews, and more. Besides, Google Maps displays photos of the businesses and locations, giving you a preview of what you are looking for.
Waze might not have as many features as Google Maps, but it does a decent job of directing you to the nearest car park, petrol stations, and restaurants and getting you there. As a result, Google Maps wins with its extra information.
Winner: Google Maps
3. Interface and Design
Google Maps has the appearance of a standard navigation app, with a lot of information displayed on the screen. You can choose between satellite, terrain, or the default view while mapping. Google Maps is excellent for discovering new locations and things, but it may be cluttered at times, especially in large cities.
Waze, on the other hand, is far more straightforward, minimalist, and cartoonish. Waze eliminates all the extraneous information from the starting point and only shows you what is necessary. Everything is just nice and clean. When it comes to interface and design, Waze is the winner.
Winner: Waze
4. Public & Alternate Transportation
Google Maps is the ideal option If you are traveling by bicycle, public transportation or foot. Google Maps provides you with public transit information, such as timetables and maps, and seamlessly combines these into its directions. It can predict how busy a service would be and deliver real-time updates and delays. Unfortunately, Waze has nothing to offer. Waze is for those who are driving and looking for the fastest routes to get to the destination. Obviously, Google Maps is the winner.
Winner: Google Maps
5. Customization
Have you ever explored changing the navigation voice of your navigation app? You can do so with Waze!
You can record your own voice, your friend’s or even celebrities! It is unquestionably more engaging than the default voice. Besides, you can change the vehicle icons on the screen to a helicopter, motorbike, meow mobile, fire truck, or the boring default blue arrow. Google Maps allows you to switch the voice to a different language or region. You may modify the vehicle icons, although there are only three icons to choose from. And, that’s all about it. In terms of customization, Waze is the clear winner.
Winner: Waze
6. Offline Feature
With the offline mode, Google Maps provides more features. It allows you to download the map area when you have an internet connection. You do not have to worry if you have a poor internet connection or lose your signal in a rural place.
Although Waze has an offline mode, it does not provide real-time traffic updates. Theoretically, Waze needs an internet connection in order to sync data from drivers and pedestrians. For the offline feature, the winner goes to Google Maps.
Winner: Google Maps
Conclusion
It is a tie. Both Waze and Google Maps can be installed on your mobile phone. Choose the one that best fits your current requirements. At the end of the day, it all comes down to your particular preferences and the familiarity of using the navigation app.
